Well-developed infrastructure

The Øresund Region enjoys a central location in Northern Europe with excellent connections to the rest of Scandinavia and the Baltic States. The infrastructure is finely developed and very efficient. For many years, the ferry connection between Helsingborg and Elsinore has acted as an important communication link between Skåne and Zealand. The opening of the Øresund Bridge on 1 July 2000 dramatically cut the transport time between Copenhagen and Malmö and simultaneously boosted collaboration between Sweden and Denmark.

Airplane at Copenhagen AirportTwo international airports
Every year, more than 19 million people pass through Copenhagen’s international airport and one of the most important air terminals in Europe. According to a survey carried out in 2004 by IATA (The International Air Transport Association), Copenhagen airport is the best in Europe from the perspective of customer satisfaction. On the global stage, the airport collected a praiseworthy fifth place.

Several large ports
Sea transport is primarily centred around the ports of Trelleborg, Helsingborg, Copenhagen and Malmö. Following a merger in 2001, the last two are run as a single operation – Copenhagen Malmö Port – which has achieved impressive results.

The Metro & the City Tunnel
Another important project in the sphere of infrastructure is the Metro, the underground system featuring hi-tech driverless trains linking the various areas of Copenhagen together both above and below ground. On the Swedish side of the bridge, work is underway to construct a partially underground railway – the City Tunnel – which will appreciably improve access to Malmö and communication between the city and its surroundings.
