The Oresund Region consists of Southern Sweden and Eastern Denmark. It is one of the most dynamic Regions in Europe - the area generates a quarter of the combined GDP of Sweden and Denmark. The two sides of the Region are connected by a fixed link between Copenhagen and Malmö, the Oresund Bridge, and also by ferries sailing the route between Helsingborg and Elsinore.
As the importance of national borders continues to decline in the new borderless Europe, the Oresund Region is an example of an international region that reflects the modern age: two countries complementing one another in a region without frontiers.
Highly educated population
In the Oresund Region, businesses are spoilt for choice. The region is home to the largest concentration of highly educated people in Northern Europe. It is liberally sprinkled with world-class innovative environments and boasts a well-developed working relationship between industry, higher education establishments and the authorities.
Accessibility and good infrastructure
With a centrally placed international airport, the Oresund Region is easily accessible from all parts of the globe. Copenhagen airport, Kastrup, is the largest international airport in Northern Europe and operates direct flights to more than 120 destinations. Within the Oresund Region itself, journey times are short thanks to an excellent public transport network, as well as extensive investments in good infrastructure.
Political co-operation
Throughout history, there have been strong trade links between Eastern Denmark and Southern Sweden. So, whereas the expression "the Oresund Region" was not firmly established until the fixed link between Denmark and Sweden became a reality in 2000, the idea of a common region is much older.
The Oresund Region comprises two nations, and therefore has no common governing body. However, the national governments co-operate on several levels to make the Oresund Region politically accessible to its inhabitants. Perhaps the best example of this is The Oresund Committee, a regional forum for political co-operation which consists of politicians from both countries and has been hard at work eliminating national administrative boundaries since 1993.
Thriving cities and relaxing countryside
The Oresund Region features a unique blend of proximity to both big city environments – with their vibrant, cultural diversity – and relaxing countryside with beaches, forests, mountains and open landscapes. The region is surrounded by the sea and bordered by wonderful sandy beaches, with sweetly scented beech forests and open landscapes right nearby. It also enjoys a temperate climate, allowing its golf courses to remain open all year round – an attraction that no other area of Northern Europe can match.
The standard of living in the Oresund Region is high, and the welfare system is very well developed. A combination that makes the region an attractive location for businesses, employees, tourists and students alike!
